Now entering its 11th year, the Waugoshance Trail Half Marathon is part of the immersive Waugoshance Trail Run weekend, which includes a 50K, full marathon, and relay option. Hosted by Great Lakes Endurance, this intimate trail race is capped at just 200 participants—designed for those seeking a deep connection with nature rather than crowded trails.
The race begins at 8:00 am from Wilderness State Park’s Goose Pond area and follows the latter half of the marathon course—a point-to-point route along scenic single-track trails leading into Mackinaw City. Expect roughly 7 miles of rolling forest paths, including shorelines of French Farm Lake, balsam-fir corridors, and tranquil rail-trail segments. Aid stations are placed at roughly 5 and 9 miles, offering cold water, electrolyte drinks, and basic fueling; runners must carry their own bottle or hydration bladder.
What sets this event apart is its quiet beauty and environmental focus. Over 90% of the course is single-track, with stunning Lake Michigan bluffs and coastal forest scenery. Limited field size ensures minimal impact and a community-centric feel, while race operations—bus transportation from school to start, mile markers, eco-conscious staging—are top-tier. In 2024, more than 150 runners from 21 states and 3 countries tackled the course—enjoying cool 40 °F starts warming to low 70s.
Trails are well marked yet technical enough—with roots, rocks, and gentle elevation—to challenge but not overwhelm (RaceRaves rates difficulty 3/5, scenery 4.5/5, production 5/5). Finishers receive a hardwood medallion and access to Mackinaw City’s welcoming post-race aid. Ideal for trail lovers who favor connection over competition, with pace, peace, and wild beauty as rewards.
