Set against the serene backdrop of Escondido’s Daley Ranch, Second Wind Trail Running invites participants to The Ranch 50K & Half Marathon. Celebrated as a standout in the SoCal Ultra Series, this event offers both ambitious ultrarunners and trail newcomers a chance to test their limits on a single-loop course tailored for endurance and community vibes.
The 50K entails two laps of a 25K circuit—each loop packing 3,159 ft (963 m) of elevation, totaling 6,318 ft (1,926 m) of gain. Runners tackle varied terrain, including rolling single-track, fire roads, and scenic ridgelines around Dixon Lake. Three well-stocked aid stations provide fuel and support: La Honda (5.4 mi), Cougar Pass (10.8 mi), and Dixon Lake (15.5 mi). Cutoffs at 4–4.75 hrs for loop one and 9.5 hrs total help maintain safety and pace.
For those opting for the Half Marathon, a single lap packs 2,706 ft (825 m) of vertical, with the same aid station layout and a 9-hour cutoff. Support continues beyond the course—pre-event training runs loop through the route, and race-day logistics include packet pickup at Milestone Running, a post-race meal, and a lively after-party.
The event bolsters community and philanthropy: partnered with Wounded Warrior Project, proceeds support injured veterans, and elite-style awards create incentive across divisions. Course records are noteworthy—men’s 50K: 4:16:49, women’s: 5:12:30; half marathon records stand at ~1:33 (NM) and 1:45.
From technical climbs to lakeside charm, The Ranch offers a trail experience both rugged and rewarding. Whether aiming simply to finish the half or push through a full ultramarathon, expect camaraderie, challenge, and a scenic taste of Southern California’s natural beauty.
