Rock ‘n’ Roll DC takes you on a tour of the nation’s capital that most visitors never get to experience on foot. The course runs past the monuments and memorials along the National Mall, through Georgetown’s cobblestone-adjacent streets, and along the Potomac River — with the kind of iconic backdrops that make every mile feel like a postcard. It’s one of the most scenic urban courses in the country, and the March timing catches D.C.’s cherry blossoms in early bloom along the Tidal Basin.
The half marathon draws a large, enthusiastic field, and the live music at every mile marker keeps the energy high even through the inevitable wind tunnels between government buildings. The course has some moderate inclines — particularly through the Georgetown section and around Rock Creek — but nothing that should throw off your pacing. The finish on the National Mall, with the Capitol dome in view, delivers one of the most memorable finish-line moments in American road racing.
D.C. is exceptionally well-connected by Metro, and runners staying in Arlington or Alexandria can reach the start without driving. The city’s restaurant scene has exploded in recent years, and neighborhoods like Shaw and Capitol Hill offer excellent pre-race dining that’s a world away from the typical tourist spots.
