On Saturday, June 7, 2025, the remote and rolling Nebraska Sandhills host the one-of-a-kind Sandhills Marathon (6 a.m.) and its scenic half counterpart, the Rattler Half Marathon (8 a.m.), along the iconic Brownlee Road in Cherry County south of Valentine.
Race Highlights
- Humble origins, grassroots ethos: Launched in 2007 by two Nebraska runners who fell for the Sandhills region, the race has retained its minimalist charm: no starting pistol (just “go”), just two porta-potties on a trailer, and a shotgun start in the middle of nowhere.
- Course & terrain: A point-to-point route spanning ~26.9 mi (marathon) with half-mile out‑and‑back
earlierinto Brownlee, the paved ranch road winds through valleys flanked by ancient grass-covered dunes, wide vistas, cattle grates, sentinel ranches, and occasional rattlesnake warnings (though snakes are seldom seen). - Scenery & setting: Vast prairies, meandering riverbanks, distant wildlife, and wild isolation – Nebraska like few get to witness .
- Support & swag: Limited aid—flag the porta-potty trailer for a stop—simple bus-serviced start logistics, quiet self-reliance, and a signature silver spur finisher’s trophy. Minimal support, maximal authenticity .
- Community connection: Organized by a tight-knit group of Lincoln and Omaha runners each June, the event leaves the course cleaner than found and celebrates each finish in ranch-style camaraderie.
Why Sandhills?
This isn’t a race for purses or PRs—it’s for solitude-seekers, prairie lovers, and minimalists. With its shotgun start, strip-of-road isolation, rattlesnake lore, silver-spur finishers and shotgun-freezer aid—Sandhills is the antithesis of big-city marathons. It’s pure, scenic, and quietly epic—an unforgettable standalone experience.
