Overview

Immerse yourself in more than 400 years of Black history on our scenic 16.19K or 6.19K run-or-walk courses.

Along our captivating routes you will encounter stunning historical sites and modern street murals, Black history course signs with educational video content, and well-placed food & water stops. Our free mobile app transforms your phone into an outdoor museum guide, narrated by two-time Oscar-nominated actor & humanitarian Djimon Hounsou.

This is a cultural community event for all ages and abilities. No matter your pace, unless you are on crutches, you will make it to the finish line on time!

Run Richmond 16.19 culminates in a vibrant finish festival featuring live music, drum circles, a vendor village, a Black history pop-up exhibit, and a living museum experience—where young African American children bring historical figures to life. Bring your family, friends, and kids to this one-of-a-kind celebration of Unity in Diversity, Black culture, and community.

This event is organized by the Djimon Hounsou Foundation in collaboration with the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, and more than 30 local and regional nonprofit partners.

Course Description
Our 16.19K Run takes you on a meaningful journey through more than 400 years of Black history. Along the course, you’ll be transported through key moments in history, from the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the American Civil War to the Jim Crow Era, the Civil Rights Movement, and present-day reflections on Black history, culture, and community.

The route features significant landmarks, including the Emancipation and Freedom Monument, the Henry Box Brown Memorial, Shockoe Bottom, and the Canal Walk. Runners will cross two bridges over the James River and take in scenic views of Ancarrow’s Landing, where Africans first set foot on American soil after being shipped upstream to Richmond. The course also extends into Historic Jackson Ward, Richmond’s historic African American neighborhood, home to the Black History Museum of Virginia and a vibrant collection of stunning street art.
