Overview

Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona brings the signature Rock ‘n’ Roll series energy to the Scottsdale and Phoenix area with a course that runs through the wide boulevards and desert landscapes of the Valley of the Sun. The half marathon route takes you through Old Town Scottsdale, past the McDowell Mountain foothills, and along the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt — a paved path system that gives runners a taste of the Sonoran Desert landscape without ever leaving the city.

The January timing is what makes this race a destination draw — while most of the country is buried in winter, Phoenix delivers clear skies and temperatures in the 60s that are close to perfect running conditions. The course is flat to gently rolling on well-maintained roads, and the live bands stationed along the route keep the miles moving in true Rock ‘n’ Roll fashion.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is one of the most well-connected airports in the West, and Scottsdale’s resort corridor puts you within easy reach of the start. The dining scene along Scottsdale Road and in the Old Town area has matured significantly, with options that range from upscale Southwestern cuisine to the kind of casual spots that are perfect for carb-loading the night before.

Course Description

Note that the full marathon will not share the same starting line as the half marathon; while the half marathon will start within the Arizona State University campus along Mill Avenue and 3rd Street, the full marathon will start at CityScape in downtown Phoenix, near West Washington Street and 3rd Street. Runners in the half marathon will have 4 hours to complete their 13.1 miles, while those running the full marathon will have a 7-hour time limit on the course. Due to the popularity of this event’s half marathon, organizers have adopted a wave start to allow plenty of room for all runners at the starting line and along the course throughout the race. The starting time for each won’t begin until the shoe chip crosses the starting line.
