Overview

The Reservoir Dogs Trail Run, produced by Inside Trail Racing, returns on Saturday, October 4, 2025 at San Pablo Reservoir in Orinda, CA. This scenic, permit-only course skirts Briones and San Pablo Reservoirs on mature single-track and open fire roads—markedly different from your typical nearby park run.

Participants can tackle a 10K, half marathon (13.1 miles), or 35K, with all distances starting between 8:00–8:30 AM. The trails are moderately rolling, balancing shaded wooded sections with exposed ridgelines, clamoring for both speed and scenery. The relatively tame elevation makes the 10K and half marathon faster compared to other Inside Trail Racing events, yet the terrain remains challenging and rewarding.

The race features well-spaced aid stations stocked with hearty mixed fare—think gels, trail mix, salty snacks, fruit, Coke, and even Stroopwafels—along with hydration support; the open course design necessitates runners to carry their own water between aid stops.

The event is capped at around 300 runners, creating an intimate, community-driven vibe rather than a mass-participation feel . With Inside Trail’s no-litter and volunteer credit ethos, the race supports sustainability and strong local backing. Registration includes a tech shirt, finisher medal, and age-group trophies—even a quirky “Dead Last Finisher” award.

Why It’s Worth Running

  • Trail-first focus: Winding through permit-only reservoir trails, offering less traffic and more scenic solitude.
  • Balanced challenge: Moderate elevation gain ensures a test—not an ordeal—ideal for those stepping up from road races.
  • Intimate race size: Limited field enhances community, support, and a personal atmosphere.
  • Generous aid & swag: From tasty aid station treats to age group awards and finisher gear—even the last person matters.
  • Eco-conscious ethos: Eco-friendly protocol, volunteer incentives, and sanctuary-grade trails reflect a thoughtful event philosophy.

Course Description

Course Composition
The vast majority of the course will be run on moderately technical dirt trails and fireroads. The course has gently rolling hills the entire way, and fun twisty single and double-track trails! Hiking/trekking poles are permitted at this venue.

Course Markings
Courses are marked with colored surveyor ribbon, placed approximately every 200 meters along the course. Turns are marked heavily on the inside of the turn, with ~3 ribbons placed just before and just after the intersection. There will also be 8.5″ x 11″ laminated signs and flour arrows on the ground (when allowed) at critical or complicated sections. The detailed course map displays which colored ribbons must be followed for each route. Please keep in mind if you are running a longer distance, you will likely need to follow more than one color while out on the course. The most important course marking is the blue ribbon. Blue ribbons indicate “wrong way” trails. You will see blue ribbons, but do not run past a blue ribbon or you will be heading off course!
