From the 550-acre campus of Corning Community College, the Red Baron Half Marathon takes runners on a tour of this small city tucked into the nearby river valley surrounded by steep hills just a few miles from the border with Pennsylvania.
A scenic, moderately challenging race, the half marathon begins on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM at the campus commons on Spencer Hill overlooking the city of Corning, where it begins a 13.1-mile route with a number of gradual downhill stretches (though no hills that are overly taxing the knees).
Race organizers (including the Spencer Crest Nature Center and the local Wineglass Running Club) describe the event’s first five miles as “hilly,” followed by a gradual downhill over the next four miles, and a flat stretch for the remaining three-plus miles of the course. Runners finish the race at the Corning American Legion south of downtown.
