Overview

Taking place July 19, 2025, at Powderhorn Ski Resort on the Grand Mesa near Mesa, Colorado, the Powderhorn Ultra & Vert Challenge offers two epic mountain-running experiences. Created by Becoming Ultra, this event includes a 12-hour endurance loop and a “Vert Challenge” uphill-only format, letting runners chase distance or vertical gain in pure alpine stylr.

The 12‑Hour Ultra sends participants on a ~10 K loop starting at 8,287 ft and topping out at 9,839 ft, with each ascent totaling ~1,546 ft of elevation. Your mission: complete as many loops as possible within 12 hours (last loop must start by 4:45 PM). The Vert Challenge abandons the downhill—runners ascend the same route repeatedly and ride the chairlift back down, chasing a goal of 10,000 ft of vertical gain within lift hours (~7 h).

Both events include fully stocked aid stations, crew-access zones at the base, volunteer support, music, and views across aspen and meadow terrain. For trail lovers seeking a steep test and hearty reward, a quality medal, race hat, and awards await top finishers.

This unique format appeals to both detail-driven ultra runners and pure vertical athletes—and welcomes solo participants or teams sharing the load. It coincides with a 5K/15K race hosted by Grand Junction Sports Commission, adding a community race-day atmosphere.

Why You’ll Love It

  1. Massive vertical challenge – 1,546 ft per loop with options for 6 or 12-hour endurance heroes or vertical-only beasts.
  2. High-altitude setting – Starting at 8,200 ft and climbing to nearly 10,000 ft for a true mountain runner’s dream.
  3. Versatile formats – Solo or team, loop-based or vertical-only—choose your adventure.
  4. Supportive logistics – Aid at summit and base, crew zones, chairlift access, and music to boost morale.
  5. Community feel – Shared support with local 5K/15K events and volunteer energy at every turn.

Course Description

The race begins at the base of Powderhorn mountain and winds its way through aspen, evergreen, and mountain meadows to the top. You will gain about 1500’ of vertical for every lap. Each lap is almost exactly 10k. With an aid station at the top and fully stocked aid, crew, music, and more at the bottom. We want to create an experience where route finding and long stretches between aid stations aren’t an issue and you can find energy from volunteers and other runners for the whole day! We are partnering with Grand Junction Sports Commission who will have their 5k and 15k on the same day! The map is from their first year and we love the route!
