Overview

Set for Sunday, April 27, 2025, the Oxbow Trail Runs, hosted by the Northwest Dirt Churners, deliver a scenic trail experience with three distances—half marathon, 10K, and 5K—all starting from the Alder Picnic Area in Oxbow Regional Park, just east of Gresham and along the Sandy River.

The half marathon consists of two loops of the 10K course, plus an added mile through the Ancient Forest Trails during the first lap—totaling approximately 1,800 feet of elevation gain and including a memorable climb up Alder Ridge. Terrain alternates between well-groomed dirt paths, riverfront scenic woods, and older-growth forest sections. Finishers enjoy a root beer float and sandwiches on the Alder Picnic lawn.

As a cupless event, runners must bring a reusable container; aid stations located at the 2‑ and 9‑mile points provide water and electrolytes. Starting at 9:00 AM, the half marathon is followed by the 10K at 9:20 AM and the 5K at 9:40 AM. Expect a community-friendly turnout—surrounded by lush forest and the Sandy River, with optional camping, horseshoe pits, and picnic relaxation post-race.

Participants praise Oxbow for its balance of challenge and access—significant climbs, nature immersion, and small race charm under Northwest Dirt Churners’ low-pressure organization. With limited field size and riverfront location, it’s perfect for both trail newbies and experienced runners seeking early‑season adventure.

???? Why You’ll Love It

Oxbow Trail Runs is a standout early-season event that combines river-side trails, old-growth forest passages, and moderate elevation—all under a relaxed, grassroots vibe. With fresh air, a cupless ethos, and root beer floats to finish, it’s a trail run built for connection, challenge, and community. Course Description

The 5k, 10k, and Half Marathon start and finish are at the Alder Picnic Area in the park’s center next to the Sandy River. The 2023 course uses more trails next to the river, and the Half Marathon starts with a loop instead of an out-and-back. Each race is cupless. The Half and 10k will have water and Honey Stinger electrolytes aid station for refills of handhelds, etc., at the two-mile turnaround point and nine-mile point for the Half.
