Overview

Mark your calendar for March 14, 2026, when Second Wind Trail Running hosts the Old West Trail Runs—featuring 50K, marathon, and half-marathon distances—in the remote, wild landscapes of Anza Borrego Desert State Park. Starting from the rustic Stagecoach Trails RV Resort & Horse Camp, this multi-distance trail festival welcomes runners seeking scenic, springtime desert mileage with convenient campground accommodations and hot showers.

The 50K and marathon feature an out‑and‑back route of roughly 31 mi with just ≈2,555 ft total elevation—a surprisingly runnable course in desert terrain. The half marathon takes on a shorter “lollipop” loop with ≈670 ft gain, ideal for newer trail runners or those looking for a shorter challenge.

Start times are 7:00 AM for the 50K & marathon, and 7:30 AM for the half, with generous 3:30 PM cutoff for the ultra/marathon and 1:00 PM for the half. Aid comes from three fully stocked stations—Stagecoach Saddle, Blair Valley, Plum Canyon—offering water, electrolytes, snacks, PB&J, and more.

Course records showcase notable performances:

  • 50K: Men – 3:46:03; Women – 4:24:10
  • Half: Men – 1:24:41; Women – 1:34:29

This event balances accessibility with desert adventure. With rolling, runnable desert dirt roads, major aid support, on-site camping, and a welcoming volunteer crew, it’s well-suited for trail runners looking for ultra mileage in a festival-style setting.

Course Description

At Blair Valley, 50K runners will turn around and return to Stage Coach Saddle aid station, while marathon and half marathoners will complete a short loop and shortcut to Stage Coach aid station.

From Stage Coach aid station, both 50K and marathoners will follow the combined orange/yellow ribbons for approximately one mile on the California Riding & Hiking trail until they reach a sandy, jeep road.  50K and marathon runners will continue straight across the road, following orange ribbons on the California Riding & Hiking trail, while half marathoners turn left onto the sandy, jeep road (which will still show combined orange/yellow ribbons) back to the start/finish.

50K and marathon runners will continue approximately 6.5 miles to Plum Canyon aid station, then return along the 6.5 mile route until they hit the sandy, jeep road once again.  They will turn right and follow combined orange/yellow ribbons to the finish.
