Overview

The Love Run takes you on a 13.1-mile tour of Philadelphia’s most iconic landmarks — from the Philadelphia Museum of Art (yes, the Rocky Steps) through Fairmount Park’s Boathouse Row, along the Schuylkill River Trail, and past the historic streets of Center City. The April timing catches Philadelphia in full spring bloom, with the cherry trees along the river providing a scenic backdrop that rivals any course on the East Coast.

The course is predominantly flat with a few gradual inclines through Fairmount Park, making it a popular choice for runners looking to set a spring PR. The Love Run has grown quickly since its launch and now draws a substantial field that fills Philly’s wide boulevards with runner energy. The finish area near the art museum delivers a crowd atmosphere that matches the city’s reputation for passionate sports fans.

Philadelphia’s walkable Center City puts you within easy reach of the start, and the city’s food scene — from Reading Terminal Market to the Italian Market in South Philly — gives you world-class carb-loading options. Amtrak, SEPTA regional rail, and Philadelphia International Airport all make the city accessible from anywhere on the East Coast.

Course Description

Runners follow an out-and-back course for the Love Run, which starts and finishes at the Eakins Oval near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, near the northwestern end of Benjamin Franklin Parkway. From there, the course heads southeast along the Ben Franklin Parkway, around the Swann Memorial Fountain and onto Race Street, which keeps runners heading southwest toward the Philadelphia City Hall, which they’ll pass as they run along John F. Kennedy Boulevard.
That’s followed by turns onto Market Street, 5th Street and Arch Street, a stretch that brings runners through Independence Mall, the three-block section of the city’s Independence National Historical Park.
There, you can visit the National Constitution Center, the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and drafted by the founding fathers and eventually became the nation’s touchstone founding documents.
Once runners make it around Arch Street and back past City Hall, the course heads northwest along Race Street and Ben Franklin Parkway back toward the Eakins Oval, where runners will head over the bridge that crosses the Schuykill River and onto West River Drive.
This stretch they’ll remain on for the next five miles, as they follow the winding river north all the way to the turnaround between miles 9 and 10 on Martin Luther King Drive.
After making the turn, runners head south, retracing their steps along the river. They will take a left onto Greenland Dr. ramp before making it onto Greenland Drive. The course follows Ford Rd and Chamounix Dr for the next few miles before meeting up with Greenland Dr once again which leads to MLK Dr and the finish line in front of the Art Museum across from the start.
