Overview

Set amidst the rugged beauty of Perry County Park in Hazard, KY, the Kiss the Goat Half Marathon returns. Born from the popular 11-mile “Ascend” trail run, organizers expanded the format last year to include a full half, adding to the existing 10K option.

Participants tackle a 6.56-mile loop through dense woodlands, technical single-track, and steep climbs, completing two laps in opposite directions for the 13.1-mile distance. Expect around 2,500 ft of total vertical gain, with sharp ascents like Mineshaft and Mudslide, and bone-jarring descents including Quadzilla. The event uses an uphill time-trial format—participants start one minute apart—adding a strategic pacing twist.

True to its name, a live goat roams on course—“kissing” is optional and purely for fun. Reviews highlight the novelty:

“Just having the goat there… really unique finisher medals. I just can’t say that I’ve ever seen anything like this.”

Support includes snacks at the start/finish, coolers for self-supported hydration, and limited crew-staging zones. Trail shoes are essential and headphones are allowed after the opening minutes. Cutoff requires entrants to start lap two by 10:30 AM, with awards for all finishers and podium recognition for the top three in each division.

Distinctive and demanding, Kiss the Goat blends fierce trails, vertical challenge, and local flair—perfect for experienced trail runners craving something offbeat and memorable.

✔️ Why You’ll Love It

  1. Uphill time-trial format: One-minute staggered starts create a dynamic, strategic experience and a thrilling finish.
  2. Trail with serious vertical: Steep climbs, technical terrain, and rugged descents make each mile memorable.
  3. Goat-themed fun: A real goat on course and a tongue-in-cheek name lend humor to a tough race.
  4. Small and spirited: Low-participant numbers keep logistics smooth and the vibe intimate.
  5. Full support: Aid, snacks, finisher awards, and podium medals round out a well-run event.
Course Description

Both courses are full of climbing, technical sections and are fully wooded. Trail shoes are highly recommended.

The half marathon runners will follow this route, then go in reverse for their second lap. 10K runners will do just one lap with a bit of a short cut up at the meadow.
