Set your sights on a bucket-list trail experience as the historic Route of the Hiawatha trail opens exclusively for runners in the annual Hiawatha Fall Trail Run—a standout event hosted by Negative Split.
A Trail Transformed
Originally a scenic railway corridor, the course traverses 1.8-mile tunnels (including the iconic Taft Tunnel), majestic trestles, and stunning waterfalls before ending at East Portal. Marathoners, half marathoners, and 10K participants share the same awe-inspiring route, turning a familiar cycling path into an unforgettable run.
Course & Support
Beginning and finishing at Taft, MT, the half marathon kicks off at 9:30 AM PDT, with the marathon starting at 9:00 AM (and early-start option at 7:00 AM), followed by the 10K at 10:00 AM. Expect a 4.5-hour cutoff for half finishers (18:40 min/mile) and full support including cup-free aid stations, gear drop at mile 2 (Roland), and bike patrols across the tunnel-wilderness zones.
Why It’s Special
This one-off switch of a bike trail to a trail race brings unparalleled solitude—forest canopies, rushing falls, and echoing passages through century-old tunnels. Add to that the camaraderie of a trail-lovers’ crowd, commemorative shirts, medals, optional hoodies, and hearty post-run meals—social perks on an epic route.
