Held annually since 2005, the Headwaters Bank Run has grown from a Lions Club fundraiser into a community cornerstone, supporting the development and maintenance of the Headwaters Trail System. Managed by the trail organization since 2007 and bolstered by local bank sponsorship, this event is more than a race—it’s a contribution to the future of Three Forks’ scenic 12-mile paved network.
Taking place on Saturday, July 26, 2025, the event features a USATF-style half marathon, along with 5K and 10K run/walk options. The half begins at 7:30 AM MDT, followed by the 5K/10K at 8:00 AM, with chip timing for all and post-race snacks and drinks.
Nestled along the flat-to-gently-rolling Headwaters Trail—a converted Milwaukee Railroad rail-trail—the course wends through riverside cottonwood forests, past ponds, and out to Missouri Headwaters State Park where the Jefferson, Madison, and Gallatin Rivers merge. With 100+ participants, the atmosphere is welcoming, family-friendly, and community-minded, including stroll-friendly pacing and same-day registration.
What really distinguishes this run is its fundraising focus: proceeds cover trail maintenance, expansion projects, and operations beyond what grants can support—ensuring sustainable stewardship of local trails. As Gene Townsend, trail system director, put it:
“We’re not just dependent on grant organizations… we’re doing all kinds of things to raise money.”
Whether you’re a seasoned trail runner, family walker, or first-time racer, the Headwaters Bank Run delivers a charity-focused, scenic, and inclusive experience unlike any other.
