Overview

The Golden Gate Half Marathon does exactly what the name promises — it sends you across the Golden Gate Bridge and back, with San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz, and the Marin Headlands as your backdrop. Running across one of the most iconic structures on earth is a bucket-list experience that delivers every time, and the course packages it with waterfront running through Crissy Field and the Presidio’s eucalyptus-lined trails.

The course is not flat — the bridge approach involves a steady climb, and the out-and-back format means you’ll hit the incline twice. The payoff is the view from the bridge deck, where the Pacific Ocean stretches out on one side and the Bay on the other. November in San Francisco typically brings cool, clear mornings that are close to ideal for running, though the famous fog can make an appearance at any time.

San Francisco’s public transit and rideshare options make logistics straightforward, and the Presidio area near the start has excellent dining. SFO airport is about 30 minutes south, and Oakland International is a budget-friendly alternative across the Bay.

Course Description

From there, the out-and-back course takes runners on a mostly westward route through the city streets, along Bay Street, Marina Boulevard and Mason Street on the way toward Lincoln Boulevard and the approaching roadway to the bridge.
Once on the bridge, runners follow the course all the way over to the other side at the Marin Headlands, and reach the turnaround point at North Vista Point, where they start the second half of the race.
On the course along the way back, runners follow a slightly different course in the last third of the race, as miles 10, 11 and 12 take the field along the Golden Gate Promenade along the beach of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The course follows through here, and then along Marina Boulevard, all the way to the finish line back at the Aquatic Park near the pier. Participants will need to keep at most a 16-minute-per-mile pace, and the course will remain open for 3.5 hours.
