An enduring Bozeman tradition, the Frank Newman Spring Marathon & Half Marathon returns for another grassroots celebration atop Bridger Canyon. Organized by the Big Sky Wind Drinkers, this self-supported affair—just $5 to enter—offers a full marathon, half marathon, and a mixed-distance relay option.
Runners tackling the full marathon begin their journey at 8 AM, descending from Stone Creek Road into Bridger Canyon and onto Jackson Creek Road. The route then climbs gently over Bozeman Pass before descending into Sacagawea Park in Livingston. Half-marathoners start at 9:30 AM from the pass, enjoying the latter portion of the full course.
What makes Franklin Newman unique is its no-frills ethos—minimal aid with water stops around miles 6, 13, 19, and the finish, a modest yet heartfelt community toast, and a lovingly low price that includes a post-race potluck lunch courtesy of the Newman family.
The vibe is distinctly club-run casual, attracting trail lovers, weekend warriors, and relay teams who appreciate the scenic highway-meets-high-country terrain, camaraderie, and shared resilience. In 2023, a relay team (“Team Pericich”) conquered the course in just under 3 hrs 45, while solo marathoners crossed in around 3 hrs 56.
