The Charleston Half Marathon runs through one of the most beautiful and historic cities in the American South. The course takes you past the pastel-colored antebellum homes along the Battery, through the cobblestone streets of the French Quarter, along the waterfront with views of Fort Sumter and Charleston Harbor, and through the leafy residential streets of the College of Charleston campus. Every mile delivers the kind of postcard scenery that makes Charleston one of the most-visited cities in the country.
The January timing puts you in Charleston at its quietest and most pleasant — mild temperatures in the 50s to 60s, smaller tourist crowds, and the kind of clear winter light that makes the city’s architecture look its best. The course is flat (this is coastal Lowcountry, after all), which combined with the cool weather makes it an attractive early-season PR opportunity.
Charleston International Airport is about 20 minutes from downtown, and the historic district is compact enough to walk everywhere once you’re checked in. King Street’s restaurant row and the dining scene on East Bay Street offer some of the best food in the Southeast — Charleston has earned its reputation as a top culinary destination, and a race weekend is a perfect excuse to explore it.
