The Brian Waterbury Memorial Rock to Pier Run and Rock’n Around the Pier Half Marathon is a cherished coastal race held annually in Morro Bay, California. This event marks the 55th running of the Rock to Pier Run and the 11th edition of the Half Marathon.
Founded in 1970 by Brian Waterbury and his Cal Poly teammate Terry Record, the race began as a modest gathering of 30 runners. Over the years, it has grown into a beloved tradition, attracting participants from all over the world.
The Rock to Pier Fun Run is a 6-mile beach run from Morro Rock to the Cayucos Pier, held entirely on hard-packed sand. The Half Marathon, known as the Rock’n Around the Pier Half Marathon, starts at Morro Rock, continues to the Cayucos Pier, and returns to Morro Rock. At 10.5 miles, the course veers off the beach through soft sand, follows a 1-mile loop through a local park, and finishes back at Morro Rock.
Participants can expect a festive atmosphere with a post-race breakfast, live music, and an awards ceremony at Morro Rock. Transportation is provided from the Cayucos Pier back to Morro Bay. Please note that dogs are not allowed on the course due to the Snowy Plover nesting season, and runners should be prepared to get wet as the event is held on the beach.
