Overview

The West of the River Series, organized by Obatron Fitness, mixes community spirit, themed fun, and performance-focused running across three seasonal races west of the Genesee River in Rochester. Kicking off with the June Jaunt 5K (June 15) in Hilton, continuing with the Potato Run 10K in Greece—complete with local salt‑potato refreshments—and concluding with the Barbecue Bash Quarters in Spencerport on November 1, offering quarter (6.55 mi), half-, three-quarter, and full-marathon distances on the same certified flat course.

Each race is walker- and mobility-impaired-friendly, with family pricing and youth discounts under 19. The Barbecue Bash Quarters carries USATF certification—making it eligible for qualifying times—and features a generous cutoff extension this year to better accommodate slower runners. Training programs are offered at Greece Canal Park throughout the season, led by experienced coaches to prep for each event.

This flexible series celebrates seasonal milestones with local flavor: frozen custard in June, salt potatoes in August, and smoky BBQ vibes in November. Whether you aim for a standalone PR or a multi-distance challenge, you can enter one race or take on all three at a discounted rate. With modest field sizes, accessible courses, and Rochester Runner of the Year status for the June Jaunt, the series balances fun, fitness, and community pride. A thoughtful race series for casual joggers and serious runners alike.

Course Description

Headquartered at Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum (SDCM), racers start along the canal in front of SDCM on Heritage Trail. A portion of the trail is paved and the rest of the trail is packed earth with fine gravel. That’s less than a mile of the course. The rest is paved. Road shoes recommended. Trail shoes would be too aggressive.

You take off heading west along a lovely route throughout Village of Spencerport’s quiet residential neighborhoods, returning to BUT NOT STOPPING at the starting area, and continuing east on the trail along the canal, making a U-turn to return westward to the finish/lap line. This makes for a flat start and finish punctuated with a variety of hills from a bit on the steep side to gently inclining and declining. The 6.55-mile (quarter marathon) route is done up to four times, allowing racers from the front of the pack to the back of the pack to see each other at various points.
